go. But for him it is not tiring work. The gardener enjoys both
the trip and the destination.
Rose gardening is an activity that can serve lots of purposes.
Some go into it mainly for profit, as there is always a demand
for roses. Probably because roses are one of the most popular
flowers there are, famed for their beauty and smell. Some find
them therapeutic and relaxing; tending to something which grows
into beauty gives some people the feeling of accomplishment and
fulfillment. Others find rose gardening, or just plain gardening
a delight within itself.
Whatever it is your purpose for doing rose gardening, if you’re
still a beginner, you have to know a few things first. Rose
gardening is not a simple task, you don’t happen to notice roses

which require your attention and dedication.
First thing in rose gardening, you have to choose what variety
of rose it is that you want to plant. But you can’t just pick
any variety. You have to take into consideration factors like

whole season. You just take it out of the container and put it
in a hole deep enough to accommodate the root ball. Same with
box roses, although it generally recommended that you remove the
cardboard box first (because the instructions might say
otherwise). After you have prepared and planted, your rose
gardening activities will mainly consist of mulching, pruning,
fertilizing and of course, watering. You just have to prepare a

Dry flowers are as beautiful as they are hard to make. Here are
the four possible ways of getting flowers dried as soon as
possible.
Air-dried flowers This method is the simplest. It involves
hanging of the flowers upside down in a warm and dry place.
Drying takes about two weeks, depending on the specificity of
the flowers. Wild and garden flowers can easily be dried. Dry
flowers are also made out of “everlasting” plants. For best
effects, you had better bind the flowers together in bunches.
Dry flowers can be produced by mechanical pressure used upon
them. This is the second way to dry a plant. It is easy although
its main feedback is that it leaves the dry flowers flat and
without shape. Take a heavy object and place it on the wrapped
flowers. For the wrapping you can use unglazed paper, such as
newsprint or a telephone book. The drying takes from two up to
four weeks to complete.
A wise way to prevent flattening of the flowers when drying is
by burying them in drying materials, such as mixtures from sand,
or borax, or corn meal. These three materials can be useful only
in drying of specific kinds of flowers. A universal solution is
silica gel. This gel is more expensive than the above-mentioned
materials, but one of its basic priorities over others is that
it can be used over and over again without having to replace it.
It can virtually dry any kind of flower. Getting dry flowers
with the usage of silica gel is very easy. The gel has special
indication when it is wet, so that you can conclude whether the
flowers are dried. Usually the gel is white or blue when it is
dry, and is composed of tiny crystals. If infiltrated by water,
its colour gets more and more pinkish. When the flowers are
dried, the colour of the gel will automatically change. Unused
silica gel must be kept in air-tight containers. To dry the gel
itself after using it with the flowers, you need to spread it on
a tray and bake it in the oven until the crystals are blue
again.
Talking about ovens, another great way to get your dry flowers
is by putting the bunch in the microwave. It can take no more
than several minutes but the effects are really magnificent. To
prevent extreme drying, you may put a cup of water in the
microwave before getting the flowers inside. The bunch itself
must by surrounded by spread crystals of silica gel. Put the
flowers in a microwave container or on a flat tray and keep the
switch on up until three minutes. The dry flowers will be ready
depending on their density and the size and number of petals.
The heating time for denser plants with many petals will be
about 3 minutes. Smaller flowers will take a minute or less to
dry. After procuring the dried flowers, you should let them in
the silica crystals for 12 to 24 hours, so that moisture can be
thoroughly absorbed. Keep the dry flowers in air-tight
containers, as microwave drying is strongly influenced by moist
conditions. To prevent the dried flowers from ruining, you had
better spray the petals with lacquer. Dry flowers can be
produced also by combining the four ways, depending on your own

Children are continually bombarded with advertising for fast food and unhealthy treats. One of the most important lessons you can teach them is how to tend and grow their own food from the garden.
There are plenty of quick and easy projects that the children can get involved in. The projects will teach them about nutrition, nature, recycling and organic gardening. That’s a good outcome!
The no dig garden is a particularly good project for children because the garden can be built and planted in just a couple of hours. You do not have to prepare the garden for weeks in advance, as with other growing methods. There are detailed instructions for building a no dig garden on my website (www.no-dig-vegetablegarden.com). If a full on garden seems too ambitious at the start, try something simpler.
Growing bean shoots is the quickest way to grow edible things. In just a few days, the kids will be able to pop fresh bean shoots in a salad or sandwich or just eat them as they come. This will also work with alfalfa, cress and snow pea seeds. Put the seeds into a clean, wide mouth jar and place a mesh material over the mouth. It must be a material that water and air can pass through, but not the seeds. A bit of discarded pantyhose secured with a rubber band will do. Soak the seeds overnight in water. Next morning, drain the excess water and place the jar on its side in a bright room, near a window. A couple of times a day, re-wet the seeds, drain and return to the bright space. The seeds will sprout and grow very quickly and within a few days will be ready to eat.
To propagate your own garden seedlings build this portable greenhouse! Wash a 2Lt plastic bottle (soft drink or soda water type) and using a knife or sharp scissors, cut it in half along one side. Force it open and fill one side with good quality potting mix. Plant your seeds and water gently. A very light mixture of water and liquid fertilizer will kick start the seeds. Close the bottle back up and seal with tape. Place the bottle in a sunny position. Your seedlings should be well on their way and ready for repotting in 2-4 weeks.
Do you know very young children? Introduce them to Hairy Harry! Take one of those pairless socks every household has and sew on some eyes and other facial features. Put some lawn seed in the sock end and fill with garden soil, potting mix or compost. Fill the sock until the face is filled out and tie a knot in the sock, making sure the mix inside is packed tightly. Water the sock regularly, or prop it on top of a container with water. The loose end of the sock will act as a wick to draw up the moisture. Place in a sunny position. In a couple of days, Harry will have a full head of green hair! In a couple of weeks, he will be ready for a hair cut or styling makeover!
Children love eating things fresh from a garden. For convenience, you might want to plant close to the kitchen where the children can harvest items under your watchful eye. So consider doing quick growing plants in containers. Cress, radishes and lettuce will be ready the quickest in 6-8 weeks. Next in line are dwarf beans, cucumber, cabbage, tomatoes and onion which will be ready in 8-12 weeks. Most others, including the popular carrots and potatoes will need 16-20 weeks to mature. You could be harvesting from this little garden for months!
Encourage your children to nurture their little garden, which ever project you choose. It’s a great way to teach them practical skills and fill them forever with the wonder of nature.

This is a fast, easy way to make some free molds for concrete,
hypertufa, plaster, etc.
First decide what you want to copy. It must be something that
can be painted with Acetone without melting. An example would be
a brick or rock.
Now get some of that blue or pink rigid foam insulation.
Clean your rock and be sure it is dry.
Put your insulation on the table, and next to it put your rock
with the side you want to copy facing up. Paint the rock with
Acetone and VERY quickly place it on the foam. When it has sunk
in an inch or two pull it out.
Wait a while for the foam to harden up, and there is your mold!!
Paint on some mold release (also known as 10w engine oil). Try
not to have any puddles, they will cause holes in the concrete.
You may have to play with this a bit to get the feel of painting
and sinking your rock, but it works!!
