You’ve Been a Dedicated Treadmill User For Years, Is It Time To Give The Elliptical Trainer A Try?
The treadmill has typically been the most popular piece of exercise equipment for both at home and in traditional gyms. Nevertheless, the recent popularity of the impact free elliptical trainer has given the treadmill a run for its money. Let’s examine the elliptical trainer versus the treadmill. How does it compare? What are the benefits of each? Is one better than the other?
Both the elliptical trainer and treadmill are great for beginners.
First off, both the elliptical trainer and the treadmill are excellent equipment for getting a great workout for your heart. The treadmill is terrific for beginners because you can start out at a slower pace and work your way up to a light jog and even a full out run.
Besides the speed, you can also adjust the treadmill’s incline giving you a greater workout of your hamstrings, quadriceps and gluteus.
The elliptical is also fantastic for beginners. Mimicking the same movement as walking, the elliptical trainer is easy to learn and use.
The elliptical trainer provides a low impact workout versus the treadmill.
The elliptical’s low impact movement makes it a great choice for anyone with joint, ankle, hip or back problems. The elliptical trainer is low impact because your feet remaining on the pedals throughout the movement, there is no impact on the ground. In fact, scientific research has proven that the elliptical trainer is a more favourable exercise for overweight patients or individuals with back, knee, or other lower leg limitations.
The treadmill is not considered a low impact exercise. Yes, the treadmill mat is less jarring than running on cement; however, your joints still absorb a significant amount of impact every time you step down onto the mat. In fact, on a treadmill, your body is absorbing up to two and half times your body weight.
The elliptical trainer versus the treadmill; both provide similar physiological benefits.
Research studies have proven that elliptical trainers and treadmills are virtually identical in terms of heart rate, perceived exertion and oxygen retention. 2 So, when evaluating the elliptical trainer versus the treadmill, you are getting the same quality cardiovascular exercise and training benefits no matter which machine you choose.
The elliptical trainer with handlebars provides a great cross training work out versus the treadmill.
The elliptical or oval shaped motion of the elliptical trainer mimics the normal motion of the foot, the extension of the leg and the rotation of the hip during walking or running. This elliptical motion uses all of your leg muscles, giving you a very effective lower body workout.
In addition to this fantastic lower body workout, an elliptical trainer with handlebars concurrently works your upper body. Approximately 30 percent of your upper body gets a workout. The treadmill only works the lower body. In fact, many treadmill users ‘cheat’ by hanging onto the handrail provided on the machine. Research shows that by hanging on, treadmill users are not burning as many calories and are creating an unnatural running stride.
Not only will get you get toned arms using an elliptical trainer versus the treadmill, but the arm action actually causes your heart rate to climb more quickly. In theory, this means you need less time to achieve more results.
If you are a runner, the treadmill allows you to mimic your outdoor running whereas the elliptical does not.
If you train for running events, then a treadmill is likely your preferred choice. The treadmill allows you to train indoors while performing the same exercise that you do outside. The elliptical trainer will give you an excellent workout, but may not prepare you as well as the treadmill does.
The elliptical trainer allows you to reverse direction whereas the treadmill does not.
When you’re at the gym, you may notice many elliptical users moving in the reverse direction. When you change from a forward movement to a backward movement, you are working different leg muscles. Using the elliptical trainer in both directions during a workout allows you to utilize and exercise all of your leg muscles.
No matter which piece of equipment you prefer, both the elliptical trainer and treadmill will help you build bone density, improve your cardiovascular health, increase your energy levels, and burn fat and calories. If you workout in a health club, try varying your cardio workout by using several different pieces of equipment. If you have a home based gym, try out both the treadmill and the elliptical trainer to determine which one you like the best.

In the world of fitness, there can be a vast difference in the method of which an individual will chose to maintain their health. For many, even a healthy combination of different exercises throughout the week will center around a preferred exercise. These favorites can range from the serenity of a low impact yoga session to the grunt work of a steel-assisted resistance program. Through all the different tastes, there is one crucial element that applies for all - breathing. Correct breathing will insure that plenty of oxygen makes its way through your body and sustains your essential bout of exercise.
Weight lifting specifically has many rules of thumb when performing each repetition. One common mistake is the urge to hold one’s breath, most often referred to as the Valsalva Maneuver. While the Valsalva Maneuver is utilized in the medical field (to measure the autonomic reflex of cardio-pulmonary functioning), recreation (diver’s use it for clearing ears), entertainment (a modified version is used by trumpeters) and even in our daily life (in the bathroom…if you catch my drift), the combination of breath-holding mixed with lifting weights puts your health and safety at risk. Holding your breath heavily increases your blood pressure, may cause headaches, dizziness or lead to unconsciousness and even land you in the hospital with a stroke.
Another common mistake is chest breathing. When a person breathes through their chest, their upper body will rise with each inhalation. This method takes a lot of energy to execute as you will need far more breaths per minute and still be less oxygenated than if you were to perform the correct method which is stomach breathing. You may have learned this if you are a fan of Yoga class, in which Pranayama uses controlled and deep cleansing breathing. When you breathe through your stomach, you will notice your stomach expands and your chest, nor upper body, will move much at all. As a woman in snug-fitting workout attire, the last thing we want to hear is let our tummy expand when inhaling, but if you want to insure an effective routine throughout your session, you will need to supply your body with adequate oxygen which is done through stomach breathing.
To assist you with your breathing, remember to breathe through pursed lips. After an invigorating inhalation, exhaling through pursed lips will maintain air pressure in your airways. In effect, it will help your airway clear out more stale air, in addition to controlling your breathing rate (include shortness of breath), increasing the flow of air out of your lungs and reducing your bodily energy required to take the next breath.
Finally, a good rule of thumb is that when performing a repetition, the hardest part necessitating focus for good form and strength is when you will be exhaling. Most often, you will find it is during the contraction of the movement. As an example, when performing a Bicep Curl, you will exhale as you pull the weight toward your shoulder. After pausing for a moment at the shoulder, you will begin your inhalation as you slowly lower the weight back to starting position.
Though breathing is an involuntary process, it can enhanced by your own conscientiousness. Proper breathing takes practice as studies show that up to 83% of adults have developed improper techniques. Collectively, all the facets of proper breathing will not only insure an effective workout, but also lower your stress (including all of its disease-ridden effects), rid your body of a fair amount of toxins and lead to overall better health.

Brand new elaborate GPS readings acquired on the 16-17th September have recorded that Mount Blanc amounts to 4810.3 m. Mont-Blanc is covered by a deep icecap which has augmented by 2.6 m in barely 2 years moreover more suprisingly the volume of the snow and ice has just about grown twofold . At any rate that is as reported by the experts.
The mass of ice and snow was measured for the initial time during 2000. It worked out to be 14400 meters cubed higher than 4790 m. It was just 13500 cubic metres in 2002 maybe ascribable to the high temperatures with positive temperature even at 4850 meters altitude. Nevertheless the icecap has nearly doubled since then and at present measures 24000 cubic metres.
Chamonix town’s respected local weather man Nathaniel Kee said the increment in the size of the ice cap is among the contrary outcomes of global warming: The amount of snow hasn’t grown overall in the French Alps but with global warming we are having more hotter westerly air currents that bring in rainfall at lower altitudes however during summer this means heavy snow that settles at higher altitude than 3900 metres altitude hence the amount of the icecap is increasing. Compare this to the state of affairs during winter when snow crystals are extremely cold and are transferred by the wind so do not rest on the top.
Chamonix France is not only infamous for Mount Blanc it is also a world renowned ski field and alpinism mecca with lot’s of ski deals and chalet deals to be found. Furthermore at just one hour from Geneva Switzerland it is unbeatable for a ski weekend.

Spironolactone is generally prescribed as an “off label” acne treatment for women. This drug, though intended to help people with heart problems not zit problems, reduces the production of the hormone androgen. Androgen promotes excess facial oil secretion.
Less oil secretion limits the possibility of having clogged pores and acne flare-ups.
Spironolactone works as an androgen receptor blocker. This drug decreases androgen production in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Side effects from spironolactone can include breast tenderness and menstrual irregularity.
For this reason, doctors usually add oral contraceptives like Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Estrostephave to compliment acne treatments and ease potential spironolactone side effects. Ironically though, spironolactone is recommended for women who are not candidates for oral contraceptives.
So should a woman over 35 with acne go with spironolactone? According to the American College of Physicians, the answer is “No”.
In the 2004 May/June edition of the American College of Physicians (ACP) published a medical review of studies that tested the effectiveness of spironolactone for controlling hirsutism, acne, or both in fertile or postmenopausal women. The ACP review found insufficient evidence to recommend spironolactone as an acne treatment.
Nevertheless, Dr. Diane Thiboutot of Pennsylvania State University, Hershey uses spironolactone for female patients with acne accompanied by a suspected endocrine disorder.
For example, when a woman experiences a sudden onset of severe acne or acne that is linked with excessive facial hair growth, irregular menstrual periods, increased libido, dark patches of skin, deepening of the voice, insulin resistance and hair loss, spironolactone may be helpful.
Dr. Thiboutot noted that spironolactone “seems to control quite well those cystic-type nodules that they [women] get on their lower face and chin.”
Yet Dr. Julie C Harper Dr. Harper of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham doesn’t recommend spironolactone so easily. Only if neither topical retinoids nor antibiotics have not worked for a woman’s case of acne would Dr. Harper then suggest using spironolactone for women over 35.
Author of “Acne Messages”, Naweko San-Joyz, says “A woman’s response to androgens is so varied that limiting herself to an androgen blockers like spironolactone certainly does not guarantee a cure, or even a quick treatment.”
San-Joyz adds that overproduction of androgens is just one step in a series of potential events that could lead to acne.
Instead of hormonal manipulation with drugs, San-Joyz suggests women with acne regulate this conditional using food, stress control and greater awareness of potential acne triggers like environmental estrogens.
Women with acne have numerous treatments options. If a woman does decide to go with spironolactone, it’s best to get her prescription filled with her gynecologist rather that her general practitioner.
It’s most likely that the gynecologist will be more aware of how a patient may respond to hormonal treatments like spironolactone and oral contraceptives, thus making recovery faster.

Tae Kwon Do is Korean Karate. It means The Way of the Hand and Foot (punching and kicking). There are basically four sections to the art: Toning, Sparring, Forms and Self Defense.
It is a well rounded exercise program that encompasses muscle toning, stretching and flexibility, increasing strength and stamina through aerobic sparring and mental challenges through becoming proficient at the patterns or forms.
Most classes start out with warm-ups. These exercises are the calisthenics such as push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, trunk rotations, squat kicks and various leg stretches. For certain you will tighten your abs and strengthen your arms just from performing the warm-up exercises. Before you know it, you’ll be doing fifty knuckle or triangle push-ups at rapid-fire pace and will be able to lean up against a wall and have someone lift your leg up so that your toes touch the wall behind your ear. Tae Kwon Do will definitely help you to become or to stay limber.
Sparring is fighting in a controlled environment. It’s not street fighting and all participants wear protective gear: helmet, gloves, shin guards and feet guards, called kicks. Usually you will spar in three minute rounds. It’s basically kick boxing. Then a minute rest; switch partners, then spar again and repeat. You will get extremely hot and sweaty. Jab, punch, upper cut, side kick, reverse punch, round house, hammer fist, bob and weave and repeat. It’s an excellent aerobic exercise.
Learning the forms or patterns can really tax your brain. Many of the forms have 26+ different movements. It’s your job to remember them, in order, and learn them proficiently. In theory, by learning the forms, it’ll help you to become a better fighter. For example, one form might start out: high block, front kick punch left; high block front kick punch right. Turn 90 degrees, down the center, knife hand left, knife hand right, knife hand left, spear hand. And so it goes. If you master these, when it comes time to spar, you can implement some of these patterns into your match.
Many people enjoy Tae Kwon Do, or any of the martial arts for that matter, because it is an all inclusive exercise program. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it’s an excellent way to get in or to stay in shape. As with any exercise program, start slowly and consult your physician. If you haven’t participated in much physical exercise in a while, your muscles will be very sore for the first few weeks. Don’t be intimidated by the other students may appear to be in better shape that you are. Everyone started out as a white belt. Just have fun; and get moving!

Around 18 million US citizens suffer from stress, depression and anxiety every year and for many of them, understanding why they endure the torment is difficult to establish. This is because of the many “magic bullet myths” associated with these problems. Here are five such myths along with the root cause as to why stress, anxiety and depression arise.
1. Chemical imbalances within the brain. This is a theory with no proven clinical evidence to support it. The theory alleges that low levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain cause people to suffer from anxiety, stress or depression. Drug therapy is used to treat the imbalance. But there is no test to establish levels of these chemicals before patients are prescribed drugs and therefore, no way of knowing which chemicals are depleted and which ones aren’t. So there’s no way of measuring success either. Another issue: Over seventy percent of people who stop taking antidepressants enter into second and further episodes of stress, anxiety or depression. For another one third, they are totally ineffective. But if chemical imbalances haven’t been proven to cause these problems, why are they being treated?
2. Nutritionally deficient diet, either not eating enough fresh food or eating way too much junk food. There are many people throughout the world who don’t eat a good diet. Most of our forefathers would’ve struggled to eat the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Does this mean all of these people suffered from stress, depression or anxiety? Highly unlikely. And I know people whose diet is largely junk and they don’t suffer from stress, depression or anxiety. Also, does it mean that everybody who eats a nutritionally sound diet won’t suffer from these problems? Again, and I include myself in this, there are people who eat a balanced, nutritionally sound diet but suffer from stress, depression or anxiety. Why?
3. Toxins. The premise here is that as our air is polluted, containing harmful, poisonous or toxic chemicals, the air we breathe is causing more and more people to enter into stressful or depressive episodes. If that is the case, then everybody who lives in a modern city - New York, LA, Tokyo, Athens, Paris, London, Mexico City, Rome, Berlin, Chicago, Moscow, etc. - must all be enduring the misery of mental torment because each of them breathe the same polluted air. Is this so? Of course not. And by the same rule, does it mean that if you live outside polluted cities, in coastal towns or villages in the beautiful countryside etc. - then you’re immune from mental trauma? Certainly it does not.
4. Trauma. This means that if you encounter a traumatic event, say death of a loved one, or moving home or relationship breakdown for example, such an event can cause stress, depression or anxiety. But such events happen to every human being and not all of them become depressed. This means that events cannot cause these problems, but the way we respond to them can.
5. Genetics. If your parents suffered these problems, you will too. This does hold a little truth. Because while there is no genetic link to these problems, you can learn the modes of behavior that cause these problems from parents throughout childhood. So, if your parents reacted to events in their lives in ways that caused them to be stressed, depressed or anxious, you will learn them too. The good news is that just as you learned them you can unlearn them.
The problem with all of the above is that they shift focus from outside yourself to try and find a “magic bullet” (drugs, diet, events, genetics, toxins) when the answer to them lies within yourself. None of the above can cause depression and therefore, you cannot find a cure by addressing them. Curing stress, depression and anxiety can only be done by treating the root cause and that root cause lies in the way you make sense out of everything in your life.
Once the root cause has been successfully addressed using a combination of knowledge, understanding and personal skills, stress, depression and anxiety will never cause you anguish ever again.

When you are approaching a particularly rough time in your life, you might find that you are looking to your past for comfort. There can be many things to find that will make you feel better, and there are things that will not help. How do you know where to look? Start by looking around your house.
We all do it, we collect things. Whether we do it intentionally or not, we keep things around that remind us of happy times. They might be photographs, or they might be keepsakes. They might be travel books or even a small chatchke that most people think is garbage but you won’t let get thrown away. It’s times like this when they become important.
Since depression can sometimes affect memory, you shouldn’t try to jump to remember the significance of a specific item. Instead, take it in your hands and start holding it. Let your fingers run over it, play with it a bit. Focusing on the item will help you to start to recall its import. It will help you start to recall why you keep it around. You should also remember things from that time, and since you kept the item, they should be happy memories. Your next step is to let the memories wash over you and bring you back to that time. You should start to recall your happy places and times and it will help you, in the short term, to resist depression. It might also bring back feelings of longing for another time or place, however, or feelings of missing someone, so you should be prepared for those feelings. It is natural to miss people who have left your life, but focus now on things that make these times positive and try to bring that joy back to the present day with you.

Social Security allows a widow at age fifty to receive benefits off of their spouse’s record if they meet the disability criteria for payment. Here is what you need to know about qualifying for disabled windows benefits.
If you are a widow that was married to your spouse when the passed away or you were divorced but married for at least ten years, you may be eligible for disabled widows benefits. A disabled widow receives payment from their deceased spouse’s record; if you are not eligible for disability benefits on your own work record you can still qualify for a disabled widow benefit from your spouse.
To meet the disability requirements for Social Security you will need to have a condition expected to last for 12 months or longer that prevents you from working. When you apply for disabled widows benefits you will need your birth certificate for proof of citizenship, your marriage certificate or divorce decree for proof of relationship, and your spouse’s death certificate. After Social Security takes your disabled widow claim they will transfer your case to your State’s Disability Determination Agency for evaluation. The State typically takes 120 days to evaluate your disability.
If the State approves your disability, your case will be transferred back to Social Security and sent to a regional payment center for payment. It takes Social Security 30 to 60 days at the payment center before you will start receiving your payments.
